Mulberries

Pakistan

The Pakistan Mulberry (Morus macroura) is a striking fruit tree known for its large, sweet, and flavorful berries, which are among the biggest of any mulberry variety. Native to the mountainous regions of Pakistan, this tree has become increasingly popular in the southeastern United States, including Georgia, due to its adaptability, fast growth, and high-quality fruit. Pakistan Mulberry typically grows 30 to 50 feet tall, with a broad canopy providing ample shade. The tree produces long, dark purple to nearly black berries that are larger and sweeter than those of other mulberry species, making them a favorite for eating fresh or using in jams, jellies, and desserts. Its heart-shaped leaves provide a lush, green backdrop to the striking fruit display in late spring to early summer. The Pakistan Mulberry thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and it is more tolerant of heat and drought compared to other mulberry varieties. This tree is highly ornamental as well as productive, offering both beauty and delicious fruit to any garden or landscape.

Red

The Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) is a native tree to eastern North America, valued for its delicious fruit, attractive foliage, and ecological benefits. Typically growing 30 to 50 feet tall, it has a rounded canopy and produces a dense network of branches that provide ample shade. The tree is known for its dark green, rough-textured leaves that can be lobed or unlobed, adding texture to the landscape. In late spring to early summer, the Red Mulberry produces small, sweet, dark red to purple-black berries that ripen in clusters. These berries are enjoyed by both humans and wildlife, attracting birds and other animals. Red Mulberry thrives in moist, well-drained soils and is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay and loam, making it a versatile addition to gardens and natural landscapes. Although it prefers full sun, it can tolerate some shade. With its fast growth, shade-producing canopy, and tasty fruit, the Red Mulberry is an excellent choice for edible landscaping, wildlife habitat, and ornamental plantings.

White

The White Mulberry (Morus alba) is a fast-growing tree native to Asia but has become widely naturalized in North America, including in Georgia. Typically growing 30 to 50 feet tall, it has a broad, spreading canopy that provides excellent shade. The tree is most known for its small, sweet, white or pale green berries that ripen in late spring to early summer, though the fruit is less flavorful compared to other mulberry varieties. White Mulberry’s leaves are the primary food source for silkworms, which has historically made this tree valuable for silk production. It has heart-shaped leaves that are bright green, often turning yellow in the fall. This tree is incredibly adaptable and thrives in a variety of soil types, from moist to dry, and can tolerate drought conditions better than other mulberry species. White Mulberry is often planted for its rapid growth and hardiness, making it a good choice for urban environments or areas where quick shade is desired. While the tree can be invasive in some regions due to its ability to spread quickly through root suckers and seeds, it remains a popular choice in landscapes for its versatility and fast growth.
